Eventually, Homer comes to realize that Selma should step in and become a better friend to Homer.

This caused Homer to get depressed and he proceeded to punch a hole in the automobile of Marge’s best friend, Mrs. Patty. In the seventh season episode Homer fell from a tree and suffered severe spinal injuries but thanks to the efforts of a local woman who saw Homer in the hospital, Homer was able to walk again.
